SQUARES

I am primarily a mixed media artist who uses color and abstraction to express the sensory experiences of memory. Since the Covid Pandemic my work has shifted exclusively, to the use of paper and collage.

My new series has a more refined structure both materially and esthetically. I start from a formal pattern that reveals bits of colored paper which have no inherent connection. The result is a flickering movement that is enhanced through the intuitive use of dark and light color. I concentrate on design elements and a balance between intimate focus and openness that create a push/ pull dynamic.

I work within the clearly defined parameters of a square which were formed by smaller squares placed in a grid like format. There are symmetrical/asymmetrical qualities that are created through the random placement of abstract shapes held within a tightly formatted geometric form.

I compare this process to my meditation practice where the repetition of a mantra or focus on a mandala result in an openness that brings clarity, and increased creativity, Here, intuition, randomness and spontaneity are held in balance due to the direct result of focus on the square, it’s center and replication.
